My Favorite Martian: Season 3

A first for Australia
I live in Australia and believe it or not, we are apparently the first country in the world to have My Favorite Martian - the Third Series (and the FIRST shot in colour) available. It boasts that on the cover but don't worry my American friends - it is in your NTSC TV system - and is ALL region so your players will have no region problems.

I was sweating off to buy a season or My Favorite Martian because I wanted it in colour and kept checking Amazon but no go. Found the set a while back at the local Target but it is around in plenty of other stores here (JB Hifi for example). Full price here in OZ is AUS$69 (about US$60) which is pretty expensive but I managed to buy it for AUS$55 which is still steep but I really wanted it.

Enough of that. What about it.

Well I love it. It is the complete 3rd series (32 episodes) and as an extra includes the orignal unaired pilot episode (1963 BW). It is great to see how Uncle Martian came to end up with Tim...

A Well Packaged Show With Nice Extras
I ordered this 3rd season of My Favorite Martian from Australia in November, 2007 for $53 (American dollars) including shipping, and it has turned out to be great. The single sided discs are in a plastic multipack, as opposed to the cardboard packages that held the 3 Rhino double sided discs for each of seasons 1 and 2. With the exception of one episode featuring Yvonne "Batgirl" Craig, which, though full length, appears to be from a faded 16mm print, the episodes are very clear, unedited, and have good sound.

Finally, the last season of My Favorite Martian
More than anything, seeing this set finally become available is great news for those of us who bought the first two seasons of "My Favorite Martian" from Rhino several years back...and then waited, and waited, and waited for the third (and final) season that never came.

The first thing to know about this set is that it doesn't come from Rhino, but rather from an Australian company, Umbrella. When it became clear that Rhino was never going to release the final season, Jack Chertok Productions (producer and owner of the the show) worked with Umbrella to produce and release this set in Australia -- but in a format that could be re-imported into the US. As a result, we not only get all 32 episodes of the final season, but we get to see the extras that Rhino didn't see fit to include in the previous seasons.

For those who enjoyed this show (and probably already own the first two seasons), this set is well worth buying. It's a better quality set by far than what...

Night of Dark Shadows [Blu-ray]

Welcome Back To Creepy Collinwood!
'Night of Dark Shadows' is the second of the two Dark Shadows motion pictures. At the time of it's release, this one didn't do quite as well as the first, but over the years, it has developed a strong cult following, and looks very good on repeated viewings.

What always impressed me about 'Night of Dark Shadows' was it's subtlety. 'House of Dark Shadows' was fast, loud and very "in your face." 'Night of Dark Shadows' is quiet in comparison -- the music is lush and softer, and the pace is quite relaxed at times. However, what emerges is an underlying sense of dread which intensifies throughout the course of the film (similar to Dan Curtis' 'Burnt Offerings' from 1976). This makes the shocks and scares even more jarring, and by the end of the film, the audience is left feeling bewitched, bothered and bewildered!

It's also important to mention David Selby, who turns in an excellent performance as Quentin Collins. His moodswings and erratic behavior (sensitive one...

I Liked It.....
I'm actually quite suprised to see all the criticisms of this movie. I feel obligated to briefly respond in its defense. I've been going through a phase (for reasons unknown) where my wife and I are almost exclusively renting horror videos. We saw this movie last night and I found it very scary and filled with a particular atmospheric that seems to only come from movies from the 60's and early 70's. There's something dated about the style, but it is also classic.

In this genre my favorites would be: "The Haunting" (the original); "The Legend of Hell House"; "Burnt Offerings" (starring Karen Black); "Phantasm" (albeit that's from 1978). I supppose the common denominator is that they are all of the haunted house motif. I mention these movies because I thought the "Night of the Dark Shadows" fit in with them quite well. I do agree that the editing was a little rough, but I didn't find it to detract in any major way. The...

Not as good as House of Dark Shadows, but still creepy!
In this, the second of two Dark Shadows movies spawned from the cult classic immortal TV series, storylines and character traits from the show are forgotten and a completely original story unravels. Whereas the original, House of Dark Shadows, capitalized on the popularity of the character of Barnabas Collins, this movie showcases the characters of Quentin Collins and Angelique. Unlike the original, this movie is NOT a vampire story, but rather a ghost story of mystery and intrigue. The result is an eery haunting tale of betrayal, murder, reincarnation, and ghostly possession.

Note to all fans of Barnabas or vampires in general, Jonathan Frid is NO WHERE to be seen here, as he declined to appear in any more Dark Shadows movies due to his being typecast. However, David Selby is back from the show as Quentin and gives a great performance. The beautiful ladies Kate Jackson (Tracy Collins) and Lara Parker (Angelique) are also great here. John Karlen and Nancy Barrett, fan...

Arabella

A Viennese Bon Bon gone bad
Almost certainly the same production I saw in Berlin several years ago, a production I found so distasteful that I left before the first act ended. This is one of those awful stagings that make you wonder why it was "modernized". What was to be gained? Strauss" music is lush and lyrical; it cries out for a staging that reflects those qualities, not destroys them. So why was the opera so brutally gutted? To create controversy? To serve the hubris of those responsible? Or was it simply that a threadbare production is cheaper to stage than one calling for beautiful period costumes and settings. Whatever the reason, avoid this version and get the Te Kanawa or Ashley Putnam performances.
Better singing, too...much better.

An impressive Arabella
Sven-Eric Bechtolf's production of Richard Strauss' Arabella is set in 1930s Vienna rather than the original 1860s. However, the story transfers well to this time period as familial pressure with regards to the duty of a girl to marry well for her family is still very much in place despite the changing views and values of society in general.

The three stage sets - bedroom, ballroom and hotel lobby, are simple and effective - proving that you don't need to have massively complicated or overly expensive sets to produce a good opera. What is of importance is the quality of the performers and in this production, filmed at the Vienna State Opera, all the artists are of the finest quality both in their singing and in their acting abilities. Although I found the singing of the beginning of Act 1 a little stentorian this is perhaps a reflection of the powerful emotions being played out.

Emily Magee (an American soprano) makes a believable Arabella, torn between duty and...

Minder Collection Set

Incomplete
I love Minder. I own the five seasons that have been released. And that is exactly what this collection is, the previously released 5 seasons. There are two more seasons, 6 & 7 that featured Dennis Waterman, and they've not been released to the North American viewer. Then there are three more seasons with the loveable Arthur and his new Minder, series 8,9,10. I would love to see all the seasons available here in North America...and at the least maybe finish up the Dennis Waterman years. but I believe the sales were never great and my wishes will never be granted. We can only hope

Very FunnyShow
There is nothing to dislike about this classic series. You have to love the two principal characters, with poor Terry stuck at Arthur's mercy. Arthur is right out of The Lavender Hill Mob.

Hellsing Ultimate: Volumes 1-4 Collection [Blu-ray/DVD Combo]

Hellsing Ultimate is finally back on the U.S. Market.
Hellsing Ultimate is an OVA reboot, that follows the manga more precisely as opposed to the 2001 TV Series, the art style of the show is also more faithful to the manga and none of the violence is toned down like the original was. Don't get me wrong the original TV series was bloody and brual, but its not as graphic and detailed as this new OVA. For example in the OVA they go as far to show chunks of flesh and brain splattering on the walls and people being decapitated and there intestines being ripped out. This series started in 2006 and is still ongoing, so far 9 OVA's have been released in japan, each are approximately 45-50 minutes long. In December of 2006 Geneon had begun releasing this series in the U.S., but unfortunately they went under on December 2007 and only 4 OVA's had been released at that time and so only 4 were dubbed. Then along came Funimation who announced that they have acquired Hellsing Ultimate OVA's 1-7 at Anime Expo 2010. Due to the fact that Geneon had...

Best Dub Ever!
Theres a lot of stigma floating around out there that dubs are basically trash and all "real" anime fans only watch subs. While I dont neccisarily agree with this, I have started to latley feel as though Japanese voice actors are for the most part superior. Not in every anime, but usually the original Japanese voices just seem more natural to me.

Hellsing however is the one anime where the english dub absolutley blows the japanese voice cast out of the water. Not that there arent superior english dubs out there, but Hellsing is the only one Ive seen that goes absolutlet uncontested. Crispin Freeman is incredible as Alucard (between him and Morgan people with the last name Freeman just seem to have awesome voices).

Steven Brand also did an exellent job as Alexander Anderson. But really I want to praise the whole cast, particularly those who worked with accents and different ethnicities. Whether its British, Itallian, German, french, or Irish, the whole cast...

"Those who dare impersonate the dead are judged to join their ranks."
Let me start off by saying that this is one of Funimation's most comprehensive releases to date. Normally Funimation's releases are very bare-bones with literally no bonus features besides the occasional commentary track. This release, however, is incredibly comprehensive. It includes an entire Blu Ray disc filled with bonus features, not to mention the full length commentaries on all 4 OVAs! Simply fantastic!

On to a review of the OVAs:
If you do not like Japanese humor, extremely gory shows, and a good amount of camp...then you've come to the wrong place, my friend. This has abundant amounts of all of these things. Also, if you are looking for the serious tone of the original Hellsing series you should also look elsewhere. However, if you are looking to turn your brain off for a few hours for a spectacular show of vampires vs Nazi zombies, look no further than Hellsing Ultimate. It is a faithful adaptation of the manga, and is definitely worth any fan's time. This is...

The Young Montalbano: Episodes 1-3

To Die For!!!
The Young Montalbano makes us see why the girls fall for the Old Montalbano--(bullet headed, bowlegged, and utterly charming). In this delightful backstory, set in the imaginary town of Vigata on the sea (I covet his house!!!) we meet the young Commissario, who is still bowlegged and utterly charming, but has a full mop of curly hair, and is heartthrobbingly gorgeous! (Che bellissimo!)

The writers and directors have enhanced the plausibility of the entire story by giving us a real history to the established Montalbano series, introducing us to the younger versions of the denizens of the Questura that keeps a watchful eye on the territory between Vigata and Montelusa: Salvo Montalbano is mentored by Fazio's simpatico father; the younger Catarella is as endearingly misbegotten as the older Caterella; young Fazio, straight out of the police academy, is tack-sharp; and lady-killer Mimi Augello, with a full moustache, is full of himself.

We meet the beautiful and...

Sicilian Ecstasy
The Young Montalbano is a prequel to the very popular Detective Montalbano Italian mystery series. The Montalbano shows were originally aired in the United States on the MegaHertDetective Montalbano: Episodes 1-3z Networks in the Washington, D.C. area and quickly built a national cult following. Salvo Montablano is a Sicilian detective who works for the police as opposed to what the Italians call "the flying squad" and he is one of the great characters of detective fiction. Each of the Montalbano's is a movie in itself, with movie quality production in every sense. There is so much to love about these shows - acting, comedy, cinematography, script - that it is hard to know where to begin.

Young Montalbano shows the early years of Detective Montalbano. When the actors in Montalbano became too expensive or weary of their roles, RAI could not think of substituting others. Followers of Montalbano are too...

See my review of The Young Montalbano: Episodes 1-3.
After the jarring experience of seeing Montalbano many years younger and just starting out with his career, I gradually warmed to the performance of this young and extremely talented actor. Indeed, I soon believe I was watching the "real" Montalbano, minus a few years. And even the plot lines follow the same very general pattern, although the plots themselves are --- as in the original series --- rather different. Definitely a five-star series.

We're Going to Have a Baby

Great value for this little seen show........
The opening credits are on the set, but they play just once when you load the disc before the episode menu comes up. A bad idea, I agree, and something which should be fixed on any feature releases, but the credits aren't really completely missing.

The series was filmed in B/W for the first season, switched to color film for seasons two and three, and then went back to B/W for the final year when it moved to CBS. I guess they weren't as interested in promoting early color TV as NBC was at the time. The color is a bit faded, but not that bad, and I would bet the color schemes were chosen for how they would appear on B/W sets because very few people had color TVs in 1962!

For 39 shows, I'm happy. This show isn't great but I've enjoyed the first few shows so far. It is all new to me since I wasn't born at the time....

I can't stop watching!
To me, Joey Bishop is a true sitcom pioneer. This show reveals how a great troupe of actors can create the foundation of what comedy is today and in many ways how it should be today. Joey and his fellow cast members have the comedic timing and camaraderie that really delivers the laughs. This DVD set not only brings back fond memories but also a youthful perspective I have missed for so many years. This is television without the political correctness that distroys the shows of today. It's even fun watching the cigarette smoking. Bravo Joey and thanks.

Questar gets an "F"
How disappointing to find that, like Questar's release of "Make Room For Daddy", this set truncates the opening credits from each episode. Sorry, Questar....the shows should be in their entirety.

It's rather obvious that, contrary to another reviewer's claim, the deletions of the credits was not due to damaged source material, or both this and the "Make Room For Daddy" wouldn't have the same problem.

Fortunately, I read of this atrocity before purchasing this set. Until I find out that Questar has changed its ways, they will be added to my list of companies from which to NEVER buy.

This is a great add on to the Total Drama series. With the original cast and the 2 newbies this show was amazing.

This show is the best show i've seen in years!
This show is amazing! It's hilarious, funny, awesome, and it will entertain you for hours! The best deal is to buy the whole season for $19.99 because you save a lot of money then buying all of them separate. Total Drama World Tour is awesome. It's my favorite show. When I talked to the creator of Total Drama World Tour, she said that she wanted everyone to have a laugh and enjoy a good drama show. She had to cut out some parts because she thought that they were to mature for kids. She enjoyed writing and producing this show, and she hopes you will have as much fun watching it. Thank You!

Haunted

Loved it!
This was probably my favorite season out of all six seasons. Season six is a little predictable and I was a little disappointed after season five, but over all still a great show that touches on some critical topics, especially for the 90's!

... and season 6 is coming as well!
I ordered it as soon as that was possible and I loved it as much as I did when I first saw it on TV all those years ago. And today I have received the message that season 6 will be available in October. Of course, the DVD does not contain any extras, but after waiting so many years for those last three seasons to be published, I hardly care about that anymore. By October the collection will be completed and we can stop signing online-petitions.

Closed-Captioning or English Subtitles
I am very disappointed to see season 4 and 5 does not contain any captioning or English subtitling. I am deaf and I always wanted to see this but now I cannot.

Il Prigionier Superbo & La Serva Padrona [Blu-ray]

More amazing rare Pergolesi from Jesi
Last year saw the Blu-ray release of Adriano in Siria, the first Pergolesi opera made available through a new initiative by the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini to not only stage new editions of all the existing opera works by the composer - all of them rare, most all-but forgotten - but to have them all released to the public on DVD and, if we're lucky, Blu-ray. The hopes raised by Adriano in Siria at the possibility of recovering some unheard of masterpieces are met with yet another extraordinary work (or should I say pair of works, since the composer's Intermezzos are also being recorded and released alongside the main works) in the 1732 dramma per musica Il Prigionier Superbo (The Proud Captive), which is released here alongside its rather more famous Intermezzo, La Serva Padrona. And, happily, it's another exceptionally well-performed production of a work that truly merits rediscovery and re-evaluation, which...

Pergolesi in Iesi
Read the reviews by Keris Nine and Giordano Bruno first. Everything they say is bang on. (Even their points of disagreement make sense. You won't get unanimity about this DVD.)

First, what's good about this DVD and why should you buy it if you are a serious music lover and opera afficionado?

1.) Pergolesi's music, melodically straightforward, often hard-driving, often rhythmically inventive (in a way that makes it fun to listen to, but tricky to play.) Most music lovers know and love Stravinsky's Pulcinello, which is based on the music of Pergolesi. Stravinsky has beautifully captured the charm of Pergolesi's music, and given it a neo-classical update.

A good many of us know about La Serva Padrona, which changed the course of opera and opened the way for longer and more "serious" applications of commedia dell'arte, such as The Marriage of Figaro (which may not have been possible without Serva.) The evening recreated by these DVDs is one of the most...

Weirder Ain't Always Gooder!
Read Keris Nine's review before continuing with mine. Keris says all the nice things about these two productions that I would prefer to say, and Keris is a consistently fine reviewer. However ...

These two DVDs make a very good case for the value of sound-only CDs. The staging of La Serva Padrona, mis-en-scene in a circus, is not offensive. In fact, it's modestly amusing. But it completely disregards and diminishes both the humor and the earnest social commentary of the libretto, which is all about class consciousness and class resentment. If the drama is so dispensable, why not just stage it as a concert, even though it was the drama more than the rather workaday music that kept this intermezzo popular far longer than any other stage piece by Pergolesi?

"Il Prigionier Superbo" is another matter. Several of the arias and ensemble pieces in it are very fine, fiery/luscious Vivaldi-worthy Baroque, and some of the principal singers are musically magnificent in their...

Kaufmann/Zurich-Humperdinck-Konigskinder

A Humperdinck Rarity given a Wondrous Performance
Yes, everyone has heard and seen Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, and it has become a holiday staple in opera houses around the world. But few, at least in the US, have heard of another work by Humperdinck - Königskinder - that receives a sterling performance here. The opera dates to 1910 and was hailed as the most important new opera since Parsifal. But in the century since, outside German-speaking countries Königskinder is rarely seen on stage.

The story is involved (the opera is 3 hours in length) and flows as follows: Once upon a time a witch cast a spell upon a king's daughter and held her in servitude as a goose-herd. A prince found her in the forest and loved her. She loved him in return, and would gladly have gone away from her sordid surroundings with him, though she had spurned the crown which he had offered her in exchange for her wreath of flowers; but when she escaped from her jailer she found that she could not break the charm which held her...

Best in the field
compare to his other work Hanzel and Gretel, Konigskinder is relatively less known and less performed. In fact when I looked for a dvd, this was the only one. Intended as a family opera it is a fairy tale with witch, prince and princess. But adults can also enjoy for its dark insight on human nature and a nice terrible ending. Recently seen a live performance in Germany with my friend who thought Engelbert Humperdinck was a pop singer, the chance meeting with the opera and this dvd I bought at the venue gave me some useful reference points.

First this is for sure the best of what is out there which is an easy competition since there's only one.
Second, although modernised, this is a coherent, intelligent and beautiful production by reknowned Zurich Opera.
Third, I'd give a higher points on its theatrical level but the musical part was also brilliant.
Fourth, this is surely a much better production than what I saw on the stage for 60 something euro...

A great performance, but do get the blu-ray to avoid missing Act III.
I confess that I am totally unfamiliar with this work. I have considerable difficulty following the story with its biolab setting, which otherwise should be in the forest.
This is one of the famous Zurich knapsack productions of the 21st century. No trace of the Märchenoper, but there are still reminiscents of the Anderson-like folklores, though.
In that sense, this production should not count as a failure, however unlike the original setting.
Certainly, in its most important sense - music wise, this is a first rate performance. Ingo Metzmacher orchestrates the folklore materials in a grandiose manner, and the result is very luxurious to the ears. On top of the rich sounding orchestra, of course we have the 21st century tenor king Jonas Kaufmann performing the title role of the King's son in one of his perfect renditions. Kaufmann covers himself in total glory here, from singing to acting to stage presence, even though only dorned in everyday modern attire...

super, quick efficient
I love the Stott Pilates approach. Moira cues are easy to follow and the exercises are well designed and have a delicious order to them. At the end of the workout, I stall taller and feel energized. My tummy is flatter.

Nice workout with only one or two flaws
I've been on the lookout for good workouts to mix up my morning program. I'm looking for something that gets my heart rate up, is interesting enough to keep me from looking at the clock too much for 30 minutes and is not high impact. If it helps you know what kind of workouts I mean, I have done quite a few Leslie Sansone walking workouts. I really do like those, but if you've done much Leslie, perhaps like me, you sometimes do need a break.

Since I spotted this walking workout I thought I'd give it a try. There is a lot to like here, such as:

--Nice set, pleasant to look at.
--The clothing the participants are wearing is neat, simple and modest.
--The women in the class (and this was a pleasant surprise) appear to be closer to my age...40s? I'm speaking mainly about the two main ladies. The main instructor might even be 50, but she looks great and is inspiring. This is a nice change of pace for a middle-aged woman like me...it's encouraging to see...

Curb before Curb
I don't know how much of the show is improvised, but it has a similar feel to Curb Your Enthusiasm in many ways. Follow the career arc of a late night talk show host - just a cut below Letterman and Leno - with an entertaining ensemble cast and guest Hollywood stars playing versions of themselves. The infighting, insincerity, self-absorption all ring true in a humorous way - and that's just Larry.

Whatever it takes
Maybe it's because Matthew Fox is so popular on the TV series Lost, or maybe it's because there was such an outcry from fans for more DVDs. Whatever the reason, it's about time we got season two! Hopefully they'll release the remaining seasons, too.

Party of Five is a wonderful show, whether you're watching it as a fan or for the first time. Each season gets better and better.

YAY!!!
This is my favorite show of all time, and I thought that I would have to keep watching season one over and over again. The only problem is that they never advertise the releases very well. I think that if they did that, we wouldn't have a problem with the lack of sales and then we could get more seasons! YEESH...I had to just keep randomly looking every few months, and I happened to look on the release date for season two. Can't wait to see this excited saga continue...KEEP BUYING FANS!!!

Great for kids and good for adults
I like many shows based upon the lessons that are learned not just for the entertainment value, Peep has that and more. With having toddlers they repeatedly like to watch the same thing over and over so this is a good one that is not too annoying to repeatedly watch for an adult. It not only keeps my attention, my child's attention but even my 1st graders attention.

Laugh out loud funny
My kids (3 & 4) think this is the funniest show they've ever seen. I like it because there are short, 15-minute shows that they can watch as I get dinner ready and I don't feel like they're parked in front of the TV set. It's very cute!

One of our favorites

One I'm VERY proud of, the other, I'm ashamed to say we're related due to her rudeness, ignorance, foul mouth, etc. on the show. Aside from that, I still got the 2 episodes, since I wasn't invited & because no matter what, they're still MY family.

Over the top reality television.
If your in the mood for completely over the top reality television this is a good pick. The show feels somewhat scripted and the brides appear to be performing for the cameras, exaggerated versions of their personalities most likely. A few of the episodes provide some pretty good laughs and surprises. Hard to believe that only one of the couples didn't work out.

Very entertaining
Jeanne, what a witch!!!She makes me appreciate how wonderful my daughter is. You have got to see this. You will be very entertained

Apocalypse 2012

Love it
The shows from season one are eye opening where Ventura's gift for gab places a new spin on disturbing subjects that most Americans avoid in conversation because of its content. These shows are worth watching because the subject matter is very interesting and informative.

whatever
There could be a million reasons to do this. The show proves nothing. Sorry, but I just don't see a conspiracy here.

Awesome show
I love this show I can never find it on tv anymore so I thought I would buy some episodes on here. It is an awesome show

Vegan Mashup season 1

I can't even explain how much it means to me
I just received my DVD copy of Vegan Mashup and have to tell you how much it means to me. I didn't think it would but after watching just a few minutes of it, I found myself tearing up a bit. I always loved cooking shows and still do watch the Food Network but find myself having to turn away or fast forward through the hard to watch parts as a vegan. To be able to watch it and not have to feel that was a big deal that I didn't even realize it would be. I sat down and started watching and soon attracted the attention of my five year old son. He sat down and started to watch and quickly commented that "there wasn't any animals being cooked on this show" and then started telling me how he really wanted to try this and then the next thing and then the next. We both really enjoy it and now hopefully he will follow through and try some of Toni's tasty looking Shepherd's Pie and Potato Pizza (that one really seemed to appeal to him) and Terry's Raspberry Corn Muffins and Miyoko's Sukiyaki...

Vegan Mashup Season 1
Awesome vegan cooking show! I've already tried some of the recipes and they're easy and delicious. So glad I could get this DVD as my local PBS station is not airing it . . . though they should!! I highly recommend it to vegans, vegetarians, and everyone.

good to have
PBS discontinued this series so I ordered the DVD. I'm glad to have it. I hope there will be a season two.

Alaska's Bigfoot Island [HD]

I like the concept of the show...
I was happy when this program started. Nice to see a creature program that is dedicated only to Bigfoot. Some of the episodes are annoying, ones with the team bickering, but stuff happens you know? I would recommend this to someone who likes Bigfoot info. The program is informative and entertaining, I have seen many episodes and really like it well enough to watch it over and over, it's fun and interesting TV. The kids love this at their sleep overs(Us big kids too!) That last poster needs a happy pill or something I think. No need to tell other people how to spend their $ please.

Really fun
I admit it, I'm a huge fan of the paranormal, but many of the "reality" paranormal shows are just not very well done. Not only is the subject matter fascinating, but this show is well shot and well produced so it's easy to watch. They haven't "found" Bigfoot yet, but the four BFRO members are real characters in their own right, and the locations are beautiful. I wish I had that job!

love this
Finally a series dedicated to Bigfoot. A delightful group of researchers. Love this series. Sadly it is on at ten at night. I guess that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I Love it.

Derek Roddy's Playing with Your Drums

Excellent Insight!
great dvd at an awesome price with lots of details about all aspects of setting up and creating the best functional, ergonimically correct + visually enhanced setup. Some things I hadn't considered were brought up and discussed, Derek is the man! The multi-angle cam vids of the Serpents Rise 2 tracks are worth the price of the dvd alone!

Playing with Drums
I purchased this as a gift for my husband who is a drummer. He said it was okay but it one of those things that was good to watch but something you only need to see once.

Fellow drummer to be...Don't waste your money
I am a novice drummer and always wonder if there were some general guidelines about setting up the drum kit properly regarding height and pedal position. I've known for a long time that a lot of it has to do mostly with personal preferences and and a lot with our own body height, weight and limbs length.
In any event, I saw this video advertised in a drum magazine (I think) and checked the teaser on line. I did not like the teaser but I went ahead and ordered the DVD hoping there was more to it. My big mistake.
I am not normally a complainer and I realized that there are a whole lot of struggling musicians out there trying to make ends meet but this DVD is just a joke (maybe that was the point of it and I missed it ...who knows).
The contents of this video is mainly two things. One: Derek playing a handful of complete heavy metal songs (glad mankind invented the fast forward button) and ...Two: A bunch of guys talking shop and personal preferences regarding things like...

Who Can You Trust?

Insanely Great! For Children & Kids Of All Ages! Including grown-up ones!
This animated series is the funniest thing on TV!

Interesting characters, intriguing plot, fun art style.

A great gift for anybody from a kid to a college student!

Why Cartoon Network is wasting airtime on shoddy live-action shows when great animation like this can be had from Canada (oh bless you, Great White North!) baffles me.
Totally baffles me. :D

From the same people who brought you 6teen.
The Hipster gives it a Big Thumbs UP!

A rare example of a kid's show with crossover appeal
Ok so I am a cartoon geek, so I may like this stuff too much. But I also grew up in the 90s (I'm 21 now), the age of such classics as Tiny Toons, Batman, Rocko, Ren and stimpy, Dexter's Lab, etc. Don't forget Looney Tunes repeats.

These were shows that genuinely worked for kids and older audiences, which in the realm of animation is very rare. So while I may be a little biased towards 90s stuff, I haven't found a show that was quite up to snuff in this past decade. The rare exception is Total Drama Island.

Initially skeptical (the producers' forerunning show 6teen was HOPELESSLY generic), I warmed up to it via Cartoon Network repeats and found it surprisingly accessible and entertaining. It basically follows the exploits of various teens competing for cash money while stuck for a god forsaken summer camp in rural Northern Ontario. The basic setup lampoons Survivor with a little bit of Fear Factor mixed in there. The reality show spoofery is used to great effect...

Like tire brakes, would be left better uncut.
What we have here is a classic example of censorship gone wrong. The damage is minimal, but still noticeable. CN does a good job with certain dubbed words but sometimes jokes fall flat if tampered with. Don't get me wrong this is still a excellent show. Original, funny, and delivered very well. The DVD box set is nice for a great price. But at this price we would expect it to be uncut and left alone with it's original dialogue. This is the only problem I had with the DVD. If it weren't for that, then this would be a 5 out of 5 dvd. Cartoon Network should realize nobody likes dubs, especially bad dubs.

Episode 6

Call The Midwife is Brilliant!!!
This miniseries from the venerable BBC is an absolute must see. Following young midwives working with nuns in the East End of London in the 1950s, it will have you laughing and crying all at once. Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, it has characters that will enter your heart and have you thinking of them for days.

The first episode was wonderful and the second even better. The talents of Jenny Agutter, the hilarious Miranda Hart, Pam Ferris and the newcomer with the face of an angel Jessica Raine are utilized to the utmost. It is quite unbelievable at times how far we have come in 55 years when you see the poverty, and yet it never seems to be a downer.

I can absolutely recommend purchasing the DVDs as this is one series you will watch again and again. The Beeb has commissioned a second season including a Christmas special (I love the Brits for this!) so hang onto your hats for more amazing stories next year!

A Deeply Affecting, But Quite Humorous, Reflection Of Societal And Medical Conditions In 1950's London
A surprise ratings smash in Britain, "Call The Midwife" makes its North American DVD/Blu-ray debut shortly after having aired on nationwide PBS stations. I'm pleased to report that "Call The Midwife" is a true rarity in television programming and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, the show examines the health and welfare conditions of East London in the fifties. As a young midwife (Jessica Raine) takes an assignment to work for the underprivileged, she is surprised to be stationed at a nunnery as opposed to a clinic or hospital. But she will soon find out that things are done a bit differently than she expected. In the wrong hands, "Call the Midwife" might have been turned into a show filled with a false syrupy sentimentality. But here, we find just the right balance. Nostalgia is tinged with reality. Hope is dampened with real world deprivation. The world depicted can be hard and unsavory and its...

Must See Television From Across the pond!!!
If you like British period dramas here is a new one for you!
Set in the late 1950's in the lower middle class & impoverished areas of London's East End, this drama will bring out every possible human emotion.
Backed up by lush Perry Como ballads and joyous melodies, this series will make you merry, break your heart, & enliven your every sense!
Drama, science, romance, crime, technology - it has it all!
I put this just barely ABOVE Downton Abby.
One CAVEAT: Might not be a good choice for women who have not borne their children, yet.
Enjoy!

Goofy's Giant Adventure [HD]

A big help on a recent road trip!
We traveled to California from Colorado recently, with two of my granddaughters often in MY car! Keeping a 3-yr old and a 4-yr old happy for the day while driving 800 miles (there first and last days journeys!) was a bit of a challenge. My daughter had had the foresight to download several game apps and shows onto our kindles before starting our journey, and this was one of them...both girls loved watching "Mickey", which was even more fun on our way home, since we'd been lucky enough to have visited Disneyland while in California, and both girls had met Mickey and his cohorts!

our son loves mickey
one of the only shows we let our kids watch. it's fun to see how they react to the characters. not exactly what i grew up with.. but hey, they love it and it's good stuff. now, we just have to start saving for the d-land trips as we're addicting them to mickey....

M I C K E Y M O U S E
My son who is 28 months loves to watch mickey mouse clubhouse. It is teaching him colors, shapes and counting. We would like to take a trip to Disney and I think this will help him get familiar with the characters and will not be afraid of the life size characters.

Live Finale

I was shocked and disapointed they didnt show the kids their final creations!
I love the series. This review is for the Monster Twist Episode only. I was shocked and disapointed they didnt show the kids their final creations at the end of the show to get their reactions that would have been priceless whos idea was it to not show that??!! My favorite was Roy's Monster even tho it was very monsterous especially the mouths it was never scary and always fun. Btw I used to do prosthetic makeup just like in the show before I became disabled and worked on Van Helsing in the very studio they use for the show which is between the frys and the burbank airport and has a real cemetery behind it, which btw is NOT the same building they show in the overhead helicopter shots at all.

A rare example of a great reality competition show
I'm not a fan of reality TV, especially the competition-based ones. They always seem to devolve into petty bickering and manufactured behind the scenes drama. Face Off, however, has managed to bypass all of that nonsense. This show is about TV, film, and theatrical make-up. The people who apply it, design it, and critique it. Some of the talent on display over the past three seasons has blown me away, and while the competitive spirit is certainly what drives these creative people, the show goes out of its way at times to demonstrate instances where they come to the aid of a designer in distress. That's what makes this show a must-watch for me.

Love the Creativity
If your not into television competition suspense (i.e. "And the eliminated player is..." *Commercial Break*) then I would skip this, but if you are like me and just ignore all the suspensful hooplah the show is quite good. I love to see the wonderful ideas and special effects make-ups that are created by these contestants. I am not an expert in the special effects field so even the "worst" designs on the show are often still impressive to me. The contestants are usually able to create these amazing things in such a short time that it is awesome to see. As the judges critique the contestants' work, you also get a glimpse at some of the things that are important in special effects make-up, that I found to be interesting and educational. If I ever decide to pursue a career in special effects make-up I will make sure my edges are clean ;)

WARNING: A well thought out script.
My wife has watched this show since the beginning, but I never have as it interfered with my sleep schedule. After recently buying a new DVD player I was anxious to get started watching something. I bought "Alias Season 1" and "Six Feet Under" (which I would also recommend highly). Anyway, my plan was to watch one episode a week, or at most a couple, so I could make it last. So I'm thinking I can get through the 22 or so episodes in 10 weeks. Try 2.

Thats right! I would watch like three a day. I was addicted. Conversations in my house sounded something like this...

"Honey, come eat dinner."
"No, I'm watching Alias."

"Honey, help me with the groceries."
"No, I'm watching Alias."

"Honey, I'm pregnant."
"Wow, thats great, we'll talk later, I'm watching Alias."

I'm really serious. Every episode would end on such a cliffhanger you had to see at least the beginning of the next episode. But then the middle was so good you wanted to see how it would...

Absolutely stunning -- But watch at your own peril
Part I: The show
----------------
Yes, that's right, watch at your own peril! This show is so superb that after watching it, you will be forced to judge all other shows by the same standards.

First, its plot lines and story development are among the most organic. Most shows are fresh for only the first season. Soon, their plot lines settle into predictable patterns. Alias keeps everything fresh. You can never be sure what will come next. What you think you know, you don't. Every episode reveals just a few more crisscrossing threads of a gigantic tapestry. What seems like an insignificant side note from half a season ago will come back when you least expect it to deliver the biggest shock of your life. On most shows, the primary cast stays fixed. An established character rarely leaves the show. On the few rare occasions they do, it's a big deal. In the ever mercurial world of Alias, audiences see old, well established characters leave, to be replaced with new invigorating...

A great show.
Season two started out normally enough. Syndey Bristow is a double agent for the CIA working to take down SD-6, an organization she joined believing that they were part of the CIA but in fact was pure evil.

Jennifer Garner as Sydney makes you believe in the set-up. Victor Garber, used better here than in the first season, is terrific as Sydney's fellow double agent dad. The addition of Lena Olin as Sydney's long thought dead mother was a stroke of pure genius. The scenes between Garber and Olin are electric.

Things went along very well for about half the season, then everything changed. In one episode, the entire writer's bible for the series had to be re-written. It's surprising they even kept the series title. Just as the shock value of that wore off, they did it again in the season finale with a couple lines at the end.

This season is not to be missed for fans of the series, the stars, or of good acting.

A great first season
Alias is, simply put, one of the best shows currently on TV. Few shows (especially action series) are able to move at such a fast pace, yet retain a truly human element throughout. The mark of a good show is the ability to keep the viewer begging for more, and Alias is a master at this, with every Act and/or episode ending capable of making me groan simply because I have to wait for the conclusion.

Jennifer Garner leads a superb cast as Sydney Bristow, a double agent for the CIA who, until recently, had been working for SD6, which she thought was a secret unit of the CIA, but is really part of a shadowy organization known as the Alliance. In this first season, she has to keep her affiliation with the CIA a secret from both her friends and with her coworkers at SD6, while finding out about the details of her mother's death, and her father's role in both the CIA *and* SD6.

The DVD set is presented in widescreen, with some documentaries, a gag reel, a few deleted scenes, and a...

Alias - an excellent show, well worth releasing on DVD soon!
I was extremely lucky to stumble across the first episode of Alias when it was shown on cable in the UK (Wednesdays on Sky One). Since then I have been an avid fan and have not missed a single episode. I am sure that I speak for many people in the UK when I say that I think it has been one of the best, nay, the best show to grace our screens in a long while. The story line is easily as good as anything from either The X-Files or Buffy and has a strong cast of actors playing great characters (both good guys and bad). Please would someone with some influence convince the studio to release this show on DVD (Region 2 as well as Region 1 please). It makes sense to do this soon so that fans can spread the word about Alias (i.e. get our friends to watch the season 1 DVD) in order to recruit new viewers for season 2. After all, more viewers mean more advertising revenue! Go on, release Alias on DVD and make the fans happy!

Bootleg Hustle [HD]

Entertaining but less realistic than season 2
I admit I love this show even though it isn't real. I watched season 2 live on TDC then bought season 1 here, and they clearly thought out how to make season 2 seem more real. In season 1 they make a huge deal how bootleggers aren't allowed out of the car etc ... But they pull right up even though there's a camera crew filming them at 4:00am? With no previous communication with the moonshiners? And some of the dialogue in season 1 just seems more rehearsed and amateurish. Still happy I bought it though, it's a great balance of live action, history, and how-to technical details.

Best Show Ever!!!
This show is amazing. Tim and Tickle are the best they work together to make moonshine to save up money to go legal. Tim is the serious one and Tickle is so funny and just a pure redneck genius, and he can do everything with out putting down his beer.

Fun AND Educational.
I like watching this one, because A) I have never experienced moonshine, though I suspect my great-grandpa ran some.
B) watching people talk about a subject they are so expect on, that is super illegal, is fascinating to me.

The history of it is so cool.

Raising Hope - Season 2

The Best Family Sitcom on Television Period!
It's a wonder that "Raising Hope" doesn't get the accolades like their peers. In my opinion, Greg Garcia who also produced and developed "My Name Is Earl" does a better job in bringing this dysfunctional family to life with an awesome cast like Martha Plimpton as Grandma Virginia; her husband Burt Chance; their son, Jim Chance; and of course, Granddaughter Hope.

I can't forget Cloris Leachman who deserves her 10th Emmy for her performance as the senile Great Grandma Barbara June better known as Ma-Ma to the audience. The actress who plays Jim's love interest, Sabrina, is also wonderful as is the rest of the cast of colorful, oddball characters.

Second season is better than first season and after watching the season finale, you're in for a roller coaster of laughs over the second season. The Chances aren't wealthy or highly educated but that's okay. They're lovable, politically incorrect at times, and just more real to the audience.

Look, I think the...

5-Star Show gets 2-Star DVD Treatment
I know they just "burn" the show onto DVDs for you now when you order it, but couldn't they at least have sprung for a subtitle option? No subtitles or CC available makes this worse than saving it on your DVR where you can at least CC. Even if you stream them you can usually turn on the subtitles so why not find a way to include them? Add to that poor picture quality and a shrunken DVD case insert and this is a cheapo DVD output given a price that's higher than I paid for the subtitled, special-featured put-out-by-the-studio Season 1 set I bought. Two stars just because I'm happy to at least have the season on DVD...

Raising Hope, Season 2
My son loves this show. He has season 1 and I got him season 2 for Christmas. My son is hard of hearing and there is NO closed caption available on these disc. Season 1 did have it. It would be helpful if that information is mentioned in the DVD description and information you show.

Massage with Confidence

Of all the massage videos I own, this one I can't do without
Over the years I've collected numerous massage videos. I've been disappointed that most are either sensual in nature, or don't show enough advanced techniques. With Massage with Confidence, I found a gold mine.

The massage sequence shown was amazing. It was a wonderful combination of gentle, soothing strokes and deeper techniques. Robert (the guy on the video) even used his elbows for deep pressure. I was impressed also by the clear instruction that he gave with each technique.

This video gave me some basic anatomy and physiology to understand what I was going to massage, but even more important, it showed me the "caution" areas so I don't hurt anyone.

If you buy just one video, make it this one.

good but not great
I am a professionally licensed massage therapist with 6 years experience.

I based my buying decision on reviews and the DVD description and jacket photo, which give the impression that advanced massage techniques are demonstrated. This video presents very basic Swedish massage, nothing more. The contents listed on the DVD cover claim to teach myofascial release, trigger point therapy, sports massage and deep tissue techniques. Sorry to say, NONE of these is included in the massage session in the video. I'm not sure how the therapist, Robert Haase, expects to perform deep tissue therapy or myofascial release when the first thing he does is slather his client with gobs of massage oil. He does not slow down, much less pause, long enough in his massage to even remotely perform trigger point therapy, deep tissue release or MFR. The video demonstrates a good, basic Swedish massage routine but nothing advanced or unique. If you are a therapist with any experience at all there's...

Great variety of techniques... Best I've seen!
I am so impressed with your video, Massage with Confidence. To finally find a video that teaches so many wonderful techniques is refreshing. Although I've been a massage therapist for several years, this video showed me great techniques that I was never taught in school. Thank you for such a well-done production with so many useful tools. I am recommending this video to all of my clients as well as other massage therapists. Great job, Mr. Haase!

Thomas & Friends: Let's Explore With Thomas 4 Pack - DVD

A Forever Favorite
Thomas is a long - standing favorite in our house. My four - year old son goes through phases where he wants to watch it all day every day! We just went to Day out With Thomas a few weeks ago so he is definitely on another Thomas kick making this set's arrival perfect timing!

What's better than a new Thomas DVD? FOUR new Thomas DVD's! This set includes "Calling all Engines," "Come Ride the Rails," "Tails from the Tracks" and "It's Great to be an Engine." It also includes a bonus poster map of the Island of Sodor! I think this was actually my son's favorite part because it was something new and different and game him a visual of the home of the beloved Thomas and his friends.

Each DVD has several short, ten - minute episodes. This is great for kids of all ages. The really young ones can't sit for more than ten minutes and the older can just watch them all! As a mom I love Thomas not only because my son loves him, but because it's clean fun, has great...

A Great DVD Set
If you are a Thomas the Train fan this is a great DVD set that your family will enjoy and if you are new to the series, this is a great set to start with. With so many fun episodes you will have a blast sharing this with your kids and your kids will be coming back asking for more and more (or at least my youngest daughter did). I have always enjoyed the Thomas the Train series, not only because of the writing of the series or the animation, but instead for the messages that it shares with children about friendship, hard work, dedication and so much more. It is these messages that make me bring my own children back for more and you will too!

Great Deal
Loved this deal on the Thomas DVD set. My 2 yr old grandson just enjoys watching Thomas. Thank you for passing this deal on to me.

Bhangra Beats: Round 1

Great workout, could use better camera
I found bhangra music/dancing on a visit to India and was very excited to see it put into the form of a workout. The DVD is broken down into move training and two workouts. I STRONGLY recommend taking the time to go through learning the moves before you start the workouts proper. These are helpful and if you are not the type to quickly pick up on moves, you'd be lost very fast if you simply started the workouts.

My only complaint is that the camera often doesn't show the dancers' whole bodies, but just thighs and above. I would have rather had a total body view all the time, since footwork is the primary action in bhangra.

EXCELLENT WORK OUT THAT IS VERY FUN!!!
Bhangra Beats is an amazing new workout that became and instant favorite in my household! My wife and I both do the workout individually and together and we're even beginning to get our 14 and 16 year old daughters into it. The host of the workout does an excellent job of teaching the user all the moves used throughout the workout and keeps the user very engaged throughout the workout with his high energy and clear instructions. The music that accompanies the workout is also very enjoyable!

I've tried other aerobic DVDs, but this one is my hands-down favorite! I couldn't say enough great things about this DVD and recommend it to anyone of all ages, sizes and experience levels!

Also, be sure to check out BhangraBeats.org for previews of the workout. Can't wait for Bhangra Beats: Round 2!

Great introduction to bhangra
I love this DVD! I have been a belly dancer for many years, and wanted to learn some other forms of dance that could be blended with belly dance - this DVD was a great introduction to bhangra, the basics of the foot and leg work, arm positions, etc. It's really helpful for demonstrating some of the core moves in a clearly-described and patient manner!

This is a very physically demanding form of dance! It gives you a workout, whether you are looking for one or not!

Two things that stand out in this DVD: it is very reminiscent of old school aerobics - similar foot work in some cases - and, not surprisingly, since the instructor is a man, the moves are very masculine. There are other materials out there that demonstrate more feminine bhangra dance moves - but regardless of that, I still love this DVD!

Complete Intermediate Ukulele Guide

Needs Graphics Support
This is like having Fred sitting in the room with you playing stuff. Unfortunately you can't stop him and ask him what he just did, he doesn't go into much detail explaining what he just did and there are no chord or other graphics that illustrate chords or techniques. I tried looking at his hands but you can't see what he's doing. I've been playing 'ukulele since 2007 so I'm not exactly a rookie, but I gave up on this about halfway through the DVD.
